Google Changed It's Search Algorithm Earlier This Month

However, sometimes a Google algorithm change is substantial enough that even those who don’t spend a lot of time focusing on the algorithms notice it. That seems to be the case with what those discussing it at Webmaster World have named “Mayday”. Last week at Google I/O, I was on a panel with Googler Matt Cutts who said, when asked during Q&A,  ”this is an algorithmic change in Google, looking for higher quality sites to surface for long tail queries. It went through vigorous testing and isn’t going to be rolled back.”

Twitter: The Impending Local Search Implications?

Last week at the Chirp conference, Twitter announced three big initiatives that have the potential to collectively rock the world of local marketing:

  • Points of interest: If someone tweets from a specific place, users will be able to see the place and other tweets from the same location. Think of this like “twecking in”.
  • Promoted tweets: Paid tweets that will appear at the top of Twitter’s search results for specific queries.
  • Annotations: This will allow developers to “add any arbitrary metadata to any tweet in the system.”

SEO Implications Of Location Services

I think the following stats about the number of business profile pages reported indexed in Google over the past 24 hours pretty much says it all.

  • Yellowpages.com: 219
  • Superpages.com: 553
  • Yelp.com: 928
  • Foursquare.com: 11,300

Google Buzz For Local Marketing

I think this makes Buzz a valuable addition to Google’s toolbox as it continues to push aggressively into the local mobile advertising space. Empowering local businesses to self-publish to people around them, with massive Google Mobile distribution, can be a powerful value proposition, especially if Google ties it to recommendations and its Local Business Center. But in the end, will enough people and businesses publish on it, especially given the other social options out there? We’ll wait and see…

Great insight here on how Google Buzz is going to charge the local internet marketing space. The implications are huge and the need for an optimized local presence have now become mandatory.
